The political and economic elite can get away with anything even murder itself. Corruption can not be tolerated in Zimbabwe, despite one's social class and the correctional services are for everyone, but in Zimbabwe it is a different scenario, the elite can get away with corruption. Recently, the Minister of Media and Information Jonathan Moyo blocked police from arresting the Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS) Chief Executive Officer Cuthbert Dube. Dube is the PSMAS CEO and the Head of ZBC board. Dube corruptly approved the salary of the former Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporations' Chief Executive Officer Happison Muchechetere to US$40 000 per month with other allowances. Dube himself earns US$230 000per month. This is an abnormal salary of an individual in Zimbabwe in a period like this where the country is experiencing an economic depression.
This report comes at a time when the country's economic situation is crumbling. Think of our own civil servants who are being paid peanuts but they work tirelessly in the public services. Our own civil servants ensue security thus the police and the army, the nurses and doctors ensures that people are taken care of in health institutions and the teachers. There is no money in the country and the economic situation is bad to an extent that the civil servants have agreed on a $54 increment which is practically a joke. The country is indeed suffering from an economic melt down and yet some individuals are awarding themselves such huge amounts of money. It is said that the junior staff at ZBC are not paid and some times they get paid after three to four months.Moyo protected Dube saying that he has done nothing illegal, and people must bear in mind that making a bad decision and committing a crime are two different things. Moyo added that "making bad decisions gets you fired" and an administrative decision has been taken. Dube has been sent packing but he is filthy rich at the moment. Is corruption the order of the day in Zimbabwe? If you take a closer look at most or all government institutions, corruption prevails.Dismissing and /or humiliating of culprits is not enough. Zanu pf officials should be exemplary to fellow Zimbabwean citizens and must know that corruption has zero tolerance in this country. However, it can be said that all these scandals have been put into the public's eyes so as to divert people's attention from the crumbling economy and the unstable political environment.
